Wife of NBA star files for divorce

After 10 years of marriage, NBA star Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa are reportedly getting divorced. Documents were filed a couple weeks ago and according to those, his wife cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for ending the marriage. Due to Bryant's success in the NBA, this could prove to be a high asset divorce.

Like Louisiana, California is a community property state. This means that spouses generally share equally the assets and income acquired by either spouse during the marriage. As mentioned, the couple was married for over 10 years, and it is reported that Bryant earned over $25 million in this year alone. Some sources are saying that the couple had no prenuptial agreement either, so his wife could be entitled to half of all his earnings and property.

A divorce settlement such as this one may likely involve property, very high annual earnings, endorsements, and other assets. One specific item that people have been interested in is the $4 million ring Bryant gave his wife after allegations of his infidelity surfaced in 2003. As it was a gift, she is entitled to keep the item.

Bryant's wife is also requesting spousal support and joint custody of their two children. In cases where a couple must negotiate custody of children, it is preferable that negotiations are made between parents if possible. If the parents cannot reach an agreement, however, a custodial order may be handed down by a judge.

It can always be emotional when a marriage ends. In any divorce, there are a number of details that can be overwhelming. However, divorces such as this one invite a number of additional particulars including the division of multiple properties and the other assets that could be quite complex. According to reports, both members of this couple have retained a legal representative to guide them through this process.
