Former model Christie Brinkley in bitter divorce

Whether or not a couple is wealthy has little to do with the emotional toll a divorce can take on a person. A number in a bank account does not make divorce easier or more difficult, necessarily, but in high-asset divorces, there are unique challenges presented.

The well-known model Christie Brinkley is involved in a bitter divorce battle that may be similar to divorces around New Orleans. At stake in the divorce is custody of her children, fines, child support payments, and property. Like many other divorces, the split started amicably but has taken a turn for the worse.

It started in 2008 when Brinkley quietly filed for divorce from her husband Peter Cook. The pair had been married for 12 years. Since then, explosive comments from both sides have dragged the divorce out.

During the divorce proceedings, it was revealed that Cook had developed a habit of spending thousands of dollars every month visiting pornographic websites, and he was accused of infidelity. She also wants $140,000 in fines for cyber-harassment. These statements did not go unanswered. In return, Cook accused the blonde beauty of being an egomaniac that is only out for money.

Despite the mudslinging, the couple still must come to an agreement on several issues. First and foremost is the custody of their children. Brinkley has three children. She has one child with ex-husband Billy Joel, another child with a second ex (who Cook has legally adopted) and a third child she shares with Cook. Brinkley is requesting $32,000 from Cook for school tuition and other fees. He, on the other hand, is requesting that she pay him $25,000 for caring for the children while she was away. No agreement has been reached as of yet.

While not detailed, it is likely that the wealthy couple shares property, assets, bank accounts and investments that will be up for grabs as well.

In most divorces that do not involve celebrities, this type of behavior is not publicized. This is not to say it does not happen. With emotions running high and feeling like there is so much on the line, it is common for spouses to be angry and resentful. However, with effective legal help, a complex divorce can be easier to deal with.
